Find the cause · Melbourne's west, Geelong, BallaratDrain Testing in Melbourne West
A drain can look fine on camera and still lose water through a cracked join. Static and isolation testing proves whether it leaks, and which section is at fault.
A camera shows what a pipe looks like. A test shows whether it holds. Most of the time the two agree, but not always. A hairline crack, a join that has pulled apart slightly or a perished rubber ring can let water out and roots in while looking almost normal on screen. When the question is whether a drain leaks, a test answers it plainly, with a result you can write down.
Blockage Bros runs two kinds of test. A static test fills the drain with water and watches the level: if it holds, the line is sound; if it drops, something is letting water out. An isolation test does the same to one section at a time, plugging the line either side of a stretch, so a leak can be narrowed to a specific length of pipe instead of the whole run.
Testing follows the same six steps as every job. The camera goes down first so we know what we are testing, and the locator marks where each section runs and how deep it sits. The result then tells everyone, you, a buyer or a property manager, exactly what needs fixing. After a repair or a reline, the same test shows the work holds.
When is a drain test worth doing?
- We're selling and the buyer wants proof the drains are sound
- A repair was done and we want to know it holds
- There's a wet or sunken patch over the drain line
- Roots keep coming back but the camera shows no break
- Someone has asked us to prove the drain leaks
What is the difference between a static test and an isolation test?
A static test looks at the drain as a whole. The line is sealed at its low end, filled with water and left to stand. A steady level means it holds. A falling level means it does not, but on its own it cannot say where.
An isolation test answers the where. Plugs go in either side of one section, that section is filled and watched, then the plugs move along until the leak is pinned to the stretch that failed.
When is drain testing asked for?
Testing is sometimes asked for when selling, after a repair, or to prove a leak. Owners also use it when roots keep returning or the ground keeps sinking and nobody can see why. Landlords and property managers often want a test result alongside the footage, because together they show the problem plainly.
What happens if the drain fails?
You get the result, the footage and the locator marks together, then three priced options in writing before any work starts. A single failed join under the lawn usually points to a small dig. Several failed sections along an old clay line usually point to relining or replacing the run.

Related drain services
- CCTV Drain Inspection: You cannot fix a drain properly without seeing inside it. Blockage Bros sends a CCTV camera through the whole run and shows you every join on screen.
- Drain Locating: You know the drain is broken, but not where it runs or how deep the fault sits. Blockage Bros finds both from the surface, so any dig is small and in the right spot.
- Blocked Drains: Water sitting in the shower, a sink that will not empty or a gully trap spilling over? Blockage Bros clears the drain, then shows you on camera what caused it.
- Blocked Toilets: Toilet will not flush, or the water rises to the rim and sits there? Blockage Bros finds out whether it is the pan or the main line, and clears it.
- Drain Cleaning & Hydro Jetting: Grease, fat, sludge and roots narrow a drain long before it blocks. Blockage Bros cleans the whole pipe with high-pressure water, not just the spot that stopped.
- Tree Root Removal: Roots are the classic reason an older drain keeps blocking. Blockage Bros cuts them out, jets the line clean and shows you on camera where they got in.
Three priced options. You choose.
Once the camera shows the cause, your quote gives you all three, each with its own price.
Clear it
Jet the line so it flows today, knowing a drain that failed its test will keep losing water and letting roots in.
Repair the fault
Dig at the section that failed the isolation test, replace it, and test it again to show it now holds.
The permanent solution
Reline or replace the whole run when several sections fail, then retest the full line once the work is done.
Prices depend on what the camera finds. You see all three before any work starts.
Static and isolation testing: what customers say
Reviews of McQueen Group. Blockage Bros is its drainage crew: same owner, same technicians.
Had Chris and his apprentice come and help with a blocked pipe. At all times Chris was very clear and transparent about what work was required and took the time to show using the camera, explaining why the pipe needed replacing. Thanks guys amazing work.
What a great experience! Initially dealt with Ashley to get an emergency booking and she was absolutely fantastic and assured me everything would be okay and the would fix the problem. I had the pleasure of having Harley come out to my place to fix a very smelly blocked drain problem and he was great. Called before arriving and once here, was very transparent with everything he needed to do, reassured me he would be able to fix it and then once he did fix it, made sure it was clean and even turned my fans on to air the crap smell. Will definitely recommend these guys and will 100% use them again if I need to!
Ryan and Michael from McQueen group provided me with thorough and very helpful advice. They did a great job identifying the reason my shower wouldn't drain properly and they fixed the problem efficiently. They were very professional and friendly to deal with. Highly recommended.
Great work by Chris today, really appreciate response to call out on a weekend, and fixed the blockage for us!
Daniel was earlier than scheduled time, he phoned me to advise he was on his way, i appreciate that very much. Attended property for toilet blockage, able to fix promptly and also gave me some tips for moving forward to help avoid blockages, very knowledgeable and assured they'd be back immediately if I experience any further issues. I'm very impressed and would highly recommend. Thanks team
Ryan was fast and efficient at fixing a clogged drainage system. Thanks guys!
Drain Testing: common questions
How do I know if my drain is leaking underground?
Wet or sinking ground over the line, roots that come back soon after a clean, or a smell outside with no blockage are the usual clues. A static test confirms whether the drain leaks, and an isolation test shows which section.
Can a drain look fine on camera but still fail a test?
Yes. Fine cracks and slightly open joins can be hard to see, especially in old clay pipe. The test measures whether water stays in the pipe, which is the question that matters.
How long does a drain test take?
It depends on the length of the run and how many sections need isolating. A short line with one access point is straightforward; a long line tested section by section takes longer.
How much does drain testing cost?
It depends on where the problem is and what caused it. The camera shows the cause, the test shows whether and where the drain leaks, and you get three priced options in writing before any work starts.
