Find the cause · Melbourne's west, Geelong, BallaratDrain Locating in Melbourne West
You know the drain is broken, but not where it runs or how deep the fault sits. Blockage Bros finds both from the surface, so any dig is small and in the right spot.
Most drains at a house were laid decades ago and never drawn on a plan the owner can find. Extensions, paving, fences and garden beds go over the top, and the line disappears. When something goes wrong underground, guessing where to dig means trenches through lawn, pavers and concrete that never needed to come up. That is the slow, messy way to find a drain.
Blockage Bros locates drains with a camera and a locator working together. The CCTV camera goes down the line from a gully trap or inspection point, and its head carries a small transmitter. Above ground, the locator picks up that signal through soil, paving and concrete, so the tech can follow the run across the yard, mark where it turns, and stop directly over the fault the footage shows. The locator also reads the depth at that spot.
You see the footage on screen on the day, and the marks on the ground show exactly where it was found. The written quote refers to both. Once the cause is clear, you get three priced options before any work starts, and the depth reading shapes every one of them: a crack just under the lawn is a very different job to a break deep under a driveway.
When do you need a drain located?
- We need to dig but nobody knows where the drain runs
- The camera found a break and we need to know where it sits
- Water keeps pooling in the same patch of lawn
- Paving went in years ago and covered the inspection point
- It's been dug up before and it still blocks
How does a locator find a drain under concrete?
The camera does the finding underground and the locator does the finding on top. As the camera head travels down the pipe, it sends out a signal. The tech walks the surface with the locator, which picks up the strongest point of that signal and gives a depth reading. Concrete, pavers and soil do not block it.
Each time the footage shows something worth marking, the camera stops and the spot is marked on the ground, so you end up with the drain drawn on the property itself.
- Where the line runs across the yard
- The exact spot of the crack, break or blockage
- How deep the pipe is at that spot
What if the fault is under a driveway or slab?
Then knowing its exact position matters even more. If the camera shows the pipe is still in shape, relining can often fix it from an existing inspection point without breaking anything out. If the line has collapsed, it cannot be relined, and the locator tells us the smallest section of concrete that would need to come up to reach it.

Related drain services
- CCTV Drain Inspection: You cannot fix a drain properly without seeing inside it. Blockage Bros sends a CCTV camera through the whole run and shows you every join on screen.
- Drain Testing: A drain can look fine on camera and still lose water through a cracked join. Static and isolation testing proves whether it leaks, and which section is at fault.
- Blocked Drains: Water sitting in the shower, a sink that will not empty or a gully trap spilling over? Blockage Bros clears the drain, then shows you on camera what caused it.
- Blocked Toilets: Toilet will not flush, or the water rises to the rim and sits there? Blockage Bros finds out whether it is the pan or the main line, and clears it.
- Drain Cleaning & Hydro Jetting: Grease, fat, sludge and roots narrow a drain long before it blocks. Blockage Bros cleans the whole pipe with high-pressure water, not just the spot that stopped.
- Tree Root Removal: Roots are the classic reason an older drain keeps blocking. Blockage Bros cuts them out, jets the line clean and shows you on camera where they got in.
Three priced options. You choose.
Once the camera shows the cause, your quote gives you all three, each with its own price.
Clear it
Clear the line at the spot the camera found, the lowest cost today, though a damaged pipe there will block again.
Repair the fault
Dig one small hole where the locator marked the fault, replace the damaged section and test it.
The permanent solution
Reline the whole run from existing access points, or replace it along the path the locator traced.
Prices depend on what the camera finds. You see all three before any work starts.

Massive shout out to Brandon for attending my rental in kurunjang twice in a matter of afew weeks due to a blockage in the drain. He was friendly, extremely professional and efficient in both visits. He did an outstanding job rectifying the issue and for that I am extremely grateful and appreciative for all his efforts and hard work. Thanks Brandon!
Had Chris and his apprentice come and help with a blocked pipe. At all times Chris was very clear and transparent about what work was required and took the time to show using the camera, explaining why the pipe needed replacing. Thanks guys amazing work.
What a great experience! Initially dealt with Ashley to get an emergency booking and she was absolutely fantastic and assured me everything would be okay and the would fix the problem. I had the pleasure of having Harley come out to my place to fix a very smelly blocked drain problem and he was great. Called before arriving and once here, was very transparent with everything he needed to do, reassured me he would be able to fix it and then once he did fix it, made sure it was clean and even turned my fans on to air the crap smell. Will definitely recommend these guys and will 100% use them again if I need to!
Ryan and Michael from McQueen group provided me with thorough and very helpful advice. They did a great job identifying the reason my shower wouldn't drain properly and they fixed the problem efficiently. They were very professional and friendly to deal with. Highly recommended.
Great work by Chris today, really appreciate response to call out on a weekend, and fixed the blockage for us!
Daniel was earlier than scheduled time, he phoned me to advise he was on his way, i appreciate that very much. Attended property for toilet blockage, able to fix promptly and also gave me some tips for moving forward to help avoid blockages, very knowledgeable and assured they'd be back immediately if I experience any further issues. I'm very impressed and would highly recommend. Thanks team
Drain Locating: common questions
Can you find a drain under concrete or pavers?
Yes. The locator reads the camera's signal through concrete, pavers and soil. We mark the line and the fault on the surface, so if anything does need to come up it is a small section, not the whole driveway.
What if I can't find an inspection point?
The camera usually goes in through a gully trap or an inspection opening. If one has been buried under paving or a garden bed, tracing the line from another access point often leads us back to it.
How much does drain locating cost?
It depends on where the blockage is and what caused it. The camera shows the cause, the locator shows where it sits, and you get three priced options in writing before any work starts.
Do I need the drain located before a repair?
For any dig, yes. Knowing the exact spot and depth means one small hole instead of a trench, and it is how the repair is priced accurately. For relining, the located run shows where the access points are and how long the liner needs to be.
