Blocked Drains in Reservoir, VIC

Reservoir's postwar weatherboards sit on big blocks, many now split into units, with the old clay drains and the big backyard trees still in place. Put those together and roots are the usual story when a Reservoir drain stops.

Reservoir filled up after the Second World War with weatherboard and cream-brick houses on wide blocks, each with a long back garden and often a lemon tree or a gum near the fence. Sewer drains from that era are vitrified clay with mortar joins. Seventy-odd years on, many of those joins have cracked, and the trees planted when the houses were new have had all that time to find them.

Since then, a lot of blocks have been subdivided, with one or two units built behind the original house. Sometimes the new units got their own PVC line; sometimes they were tied into the old clay drain, which now carries far more than it was laid for. Add reactive clay soil that shifts between dry and wet seasons, and a summer that opens up a join is often followed by a winter blockage.

Where Reservoir drains go wrong

Roots through cracked clay joins

Roots from fruit trees and gums enter at the mortar joins and fill the pipe, catching paper until the gully trap overflows. See tree root removal.

Units sharing an old line

When a back unit drains through the front house's original pipe, one blockage can affect both homes. See cctv drain inspection.

A collapsed section

An old clay pipe that has lost its shape can no longer be cleared or relined, so that length is dug out and replaced. See sewer repairs.

A toilet slow to flush

A toilet that rises before it empties often has roots further down the main line rather than a problem in the pan. See blocked toilets.

How a drain job runs in Reservoir

On a subdivided Reservoir block, the first task is often working out which drain belongs to which home. The locator traces each line from the surface, so the quote goes to the right owner. Yarra Valley Water manages the sewer mains; responsibility for the private pipe, from the house to the property connection point, usually sits with the owner, and if the footage shows the fault in the main, Yarra Valley Water is the one to call.

The crew covers Reservoir with Preston, Kingsbury, Bundoora and Thornbury, and the phones are covered 24/7.

Your options

Three priced options. You choose.

Once the camera shows the cause, your quote gives you all three, each with its own price.

Option 1 · Quick fix

Clear it

Jetted clear today. The lowest price, but if the pipe is damaged it will block again.

Option 2 · Proper repair

Repair the fault

The damaged section located, dug up and replaced. Fixes the cause at that spot.

Option 3 · Never again

The permanent solution

The run relined or replaced, so roots and breaks cannot come back.

Prices depend on what the camera finds. You see all three before any work starts.

What a great experience! Initially dealt with Ashley to get an emergency booking and she was absolutely fantastic and assured me everything would be okay and the would fix the problem. I had the pleasure of having Harley come out to my place to fix a very smelly blocked drain problem and he was great. Called before arriving and once here, was very transparent with everything he needed to do, reassured me he would be able to fix it and then once he did fix it, made sure it was clean and even turned my fans on to air the crap smell. Will definitely recommend these guys and will 100% use them again if I need to!

Daniel was earlier than scheduled time, he phoned me to advise he was on his way, i appreciate that very much. Attended property for toilet blockage, able to fix promptly and also gave me some tips for moving forward to help avoid blockages, very knowledgeable and assured they'd be back immediately if I experience any further issues. I'm very impressed and would highly recommend. Thanks team

FAQs

Blocked drains in Reservoir: common questions

My unit is at the back of a Reservoir block. Is the drain mine?

It depends on how the block was connected. Some back units have their own line, others share the front house's drain. The camera and locator show the layout, and Yarra Valley Water can confirm where the property connection point is.

What does a blocked drain cost to fix in Reservoir?

There is no single figure, because it hinges on the blockage's position and its cause. When the camera has shown what is wrong, three written options, each with its price, come to you before work begins.

Will cutting the roots fix it for good?

No. Cutting clears the line, but roots regrow through the same cracked join. A permanent fix seals the join with a liner or replaces that section of pipe.
