Hydro jetting sends water at high pressure through a hose to a nozzle inside the drain. The nozzle fires jets backwards and sideways, pulls itself along the pipe and scours the wall as it goes, cutting through grease, fat, sludge and fine roots and flushing the lot down the line. A rod pokes a hole through the middle. Jetting cleans the full width of the pipe, so water has the whole bore to flow through again.
Some blockages need more than water. Heavy root masses, hardened build-up or objects lodged in the line are cleared mechanically first, then the pipe is jetted clean. What does hydro jetting clear?
Grease and fat from kitchen sinks are the classic case. They go down warm and liquid, cool in the pipe and set into a layer that grows with every wash. Soap scum and hair do the same in bathroom lines. Silt and leaf litter collect in stormwater drains and pits, and fine roots creep in through joins in older clay pipes.
Is hydro jetting safe for old pipes?
Jetting works inside clay and PVC pipes alike. The risk is a pipe that is already broken or has collapsed, which is why the camera goes in first. If the footage shows a section in that state, we tell you before it is jetted, and the repair goes onto the written options instead.
How long does a jetted drain stay clear?
That depends on what blocked it. A grease build-up in a sound pipe can stay clear for a long time if fat stays out of the sink. Roots are different: jetting cuts them back, but they return through the same cracked joins unless the join is sealed by relining or the pipe is replaced.
