Much of Sunshine was built in the years after the Second World War, when the suburb grew around its factories and the railway. The weatherboard and brick homes from that time usually have vitrified clay sewer drains with mortar joins. Clay itself lasts, but the joins do not: they crack, shift and leave gaps a root can push through. In a backyard with a fig, a lemon tree or a big gum, that is often where a Sunshine blockage begins.
Redevelopment adds a second layer. Plenty of older blocks have been split for units or townhouses, and the new PVC drains often join onto the original clay somewhere along the line.
