Tree roots go looking for water, and a sewer pipe carries a steady supply. They find their way in through cracked joins, loose rubber rings and old mortar joints, then grow into a fine mat inside the pipe. Paper and waste catch on the mat, the flow slows, and eventually the drain blocks. Big established trees near older clay drains, like gums, liquidambars, willows, figs and bottlebrush, are the usual source.

Blockage Bros cuts the roots out with mechanical root cutting and high-pressure jetting, then flushes the line clean. The camera goes down before and after, so you see the roots on screen, see the pipe once they are gone, and see exactly which joins they came through. The locator marks those joins and their depth from the surface, so you know where any repair would go.

Cutting roots clears the drain, but it does not stop them. They grow back through the same gap. The way to keep them out is to seal the join by relining the pipe, or to replace the damaged section. That is why every root job ends with three priced options in writing, so you can weigh a quick clear today against fixing the cause.

Signs of roots in your drain

  • The drain blocks every few months, often in the same spot
  • The toilet or floor waste gurgles
  • Water comes up the shower drain
  • The gully trap overflows after heavy rain
  • There is a big gum or liquidambar near where the sewer runs
  • It was cleared before and came back

How do tree roots get into sewer pipes?

Through the joins. Many older homes still have vitrified clay pipes, laid in short lengths with mortar or rubber-ring joins. Over the years those joins crack and shift, and the reactive clay soil across Melbourne's western plains makes it worse by shrinking in dry summers and swelling in wet winters. Every movement opens a gap, and fine roots follow the moisture in.

PVC lines in newer estates are less prone to roots, but a join that has moved with the ground can still let them through.

Will the roots come back?

Yes, unless the gap is sealed. Root cutting removes what is inside the pipe, not the roots outside it, and they regrow towards the same water. For a drain with one bad join, replacing that section may be enough. Where roots have got in at join after join, relining the whole run seals every one of them without a trench through the garden.

Related drain services

  • Blocked Drains: Water sitting in the shower, a sink that will not empty or a gully trap spilling over? Blockage Bros clears the drain, then shows you on camera what caused it.
  • Blocked Toilets: Toilet will not flush, or the water rises to the rim and sits there? Blockage Bros finds out whether it is the pan or the main line, and clears it.
  • Drain Cleaning & Hydro Jetting: Grease, fat, sludge and roots narrow a drain long before it blocks. Blockage Bros cleans the whole pipe with high-pressure water, not just the spot that stopped.
  • Drain Maintenance: Some drains block on a schedule: the rental with a big tree out the back, the older home with clay pipes. Blockage Bros keeps them clear with regular jetting and root cutting.
  • CCTV Drain Inspection: You cannot fix a drain properly without seeing inside it. Blockage Bros sends a CCTV camera through the whole run and shows you every join on screen.
  • Drain Locating: You know the drain is broken, but not where it runs or how deep the fault sits. Blockage Bros finds both from the surface, so any dig is small and in the right spot.
Your options

Three priced options. You choose.

Once the camera shows the cause, your quote gives you all three, each with its own price.

Option 1 · Quick fix

Clear it

Cut the roots out and jet the line clean: the lowest cost today, but they will grow back through the same cracked join.

Option 2 · Proper repair

Repair the fault

Dig at the join the locator marked and replace the damaged section so roots cannot get in there again.

Option 3 · Never again

The permanent solution

Reline the whole run to seal every join and crack, or replace it, so roots have no way back in.

Prices depend on what the camera finds. You see all three before any work starts.

What a great experience! Initially dealt with Ashley to get an emergency booking and she was absolutely fantastic and assured me everything would be okay and the would fix the problem. I had the pleasure of having Harley come out to my place to fix a very smelly blocked drain problem and he was great. Called before arriving and once here, was very transparent with everything he needed to do, reassured me he would be able to fix it and then once he did fix it, made sure it was clean and even turned my fans on to air the crap smell. Will definitely recommend these guys and will 100% use them again if I need to!

FAQs

Tree Root Removal: common questions

How much does tree root removal cost?

It depends on where the blockage is and what caused it. The camera shows the cause, and you get three priced options in writing before any work starts.

Do I need to cut down the tree?

Usually not. Roots get in because the pipe has a gap, not simply because the tree is there. Sealing the joins by relining, or replacing the damaged section, keeps roots out of the drain while the tree stays where it is.

How often do roots need cutting?

It varies with the tree, the season and the size of the gap. If the same drain keeps needing roots cut, it is worth weighing that against relining, which seals the joins they come through.

Can a pipe full of roots be relined?

Yes, once the roots are cut out and the line is jetted clean. The liner seals every join and crack so roots cannot get back in. If the camera shows a section has collapsed, it cannot be relined, and we say so and price the repair instead.

Is the water authority responsible for roots in my sewer?

The drain from the house to the property connection point is usually the owner's responsibility, roots included. If the camera shows the roots are in the sewer main beyond that point, check with your water authority, such as Greater Western Water, Barwon Water or Central Highlands Water.
